Blueberry tart season!!

Every year I wait for this season, when there’s plenty of fruits at the farmers market and you can buy locally grown blueberries by 300g or 500g for a cheap price… something for those that don’t live in Japan seems probably unimaginable when you buy fruits by kilos… but out of this 300g or 500g not a single fruit is damaged or a little bit too ripe and starts to rot…

And with that many blueberries my favorite things to do are: tarts and crumbles; fruit salads; smoothies. But recently I don’t do smoothies anymore rather use the fruits the way they are… and tarts and crumbles are amazing. With blueberries I make a simple buttery pie crust, with not too much butter (I prefer adding a bit of water rather than too much butter), and very few sugar, than just wash a pour the fruits in, bake for 35minutes and enjoy while all juicy. This time I sprinkled a bit of ice sugar for the finish… that’s it. Perfect for tea time or breakfast as you wish…

How do you like your blueberries? The season here is just starting so I’ll be happy to test new recipes if you tell me!

Blueberry tart

This year I have the impression that there are more blueberries than in the past, and I bake more more fruits tart where I make a simple dough with a little of sugar for the pie crust and then just add fruits on top. I bake that for 20min at 190-200. It makes perfect simple desserts, tea-time sweets or breakfast. With blueberries I was worried that not adding sugar to the fruits might be a bit too sour, but the fruits are so ripe that actually sugar is not needed.  Actually I have noticed recently using less and less added sugar and salt to all my recipes and enjoying very much the result.

Summer!

This week P. Got married, and it was the first weekend of real summer feeling. Very hot weather, blue skies, beautiful ocean swims, hydrangeas blooming everywhere and rice growing fast. The farmers market was full with summer fruits: plums, cherries, peaches, blueberries, melons, watermelons…  so I decided to prepare a light a simple fruit tart with a simple crust based (flour, egg, brown sugar and a bit of butter) and to juste add the fruits (one peach, a handfull of cherries and two of blueberries) on top and bake everything for 20-30min. The simplicity of the preparation reveals perfecty the taste and sweetness of the fruits and the crust, rather dry, pumps the sweet juice of the peaches, while the berries and the cherries pop in the mouth!

Have a beautiful week ahead!

Summer fruits crumble

It is rare that I cook desserts, unless we have guests, because we usually snack around 17h and dine around 21h, so I prefer to fix us something good for our five o’clock snack: small cakes, tarts, crepes, always with fresh ingredients, seasonal fruits etc… and skip the dessert. But with the heat recently, we’ve just snacked on fresh fruits and I decided to prepare something that I don’t often cook: fruits crumble. It’s strange enough that I always forgot about crumbles and bake tarts often. Maybe because it always ends up with no shape and it’s not as elegant as a tart or a clafouti where the fruits are perfectly aligned (control freak!). Well tonight I’ve made one and I wish I could share with you the delicious smell of my kitchen!

I used a random recipe (without really caring for the quantity but more the texture) for the crumbs mixing flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, butter and vanilla. For the fruits I used fresh blueberries, peaches and plums. Cut the fruits in bite size, make a layer of fruits in a pie dish and then add the crumbs on top. Baked 30min at 190deg. And it’s ready to eat after it has cooled down.
