Sunday’s breakfast

A few days ago I saw pictures of bagels on IG and I remembered how easy it is to make some and how delicious it is (my bagel recipe). But I had first to masterize the croissants. Now that I’ve finally managed to make real butter croissants I prepared bagels for this morning. Since it’s bagels for breakfast I prepared plain bagels, and just coated them in sugar and vanilla instead of seeds. And because it’s summer or almost and the melons are ripe and juicy, I also prepared a plum-melon smoothie to go with. Just half green melon and two plums. Have a beautiful Sunday!!

My smoothies

I love to eat fresh fruits for breakfast every day, and when seasonal fruits are not too good (autumn and winter) or I have some fruits that got a little too rippen for a fruit salad I prepare a lot of smoothies. My idea is not to have a “super drink” with a whole week of veggies in it, but rather a tasty and delicious drink for breakfast or snack. My rules for delicious smoothies that keep the taste of each fruit are simple:

 – always fresh fruits (I don’t use frozen food). At least one very juicy like pineapple, melon, watermelon… The rest depending on the market: strawberries, blueberries, passion fruit, kiwi, nashi, peach, pear…

– 3 or 4 fruit types at max (usually I stick to 3) for better taste of each of the fruit, after more all the tastes are just blended and it’s hard to say what is in.

– no bananas, they thicken the smoothie too much.

– only add water if needed, no other complement.

It gives super easy to drink smoothies, very tasty and always different.  Sometimes I top it with a few chia seeds.

Summer time = fruits time

It’s official it’s summer!

Thought it is not yet super hot, summer fruits start to appear everywhere in the garden and at the market. Shiny pinkish plums, soft and pink peaches, melons, blue-berries, addictive cherries. Soon to come also the delicious nashi, watermelon etc… So I’m happy because it means fresh and juicy fruits every day that are going to replace the usual kiwi and pineapple! It means new recipes of smoothies and of clafoutis.

Clafoutis are so simple to prepare, and so delicious for breakfast, dessert or snack that I prepare many during the summer. It’s a very simple mixture of any kind of flour, a bit of sugar, eggs and milk or equivalent. Proportion vary depending on the aspect you want the clafouti to have. More milk and egg for a flat custard like type, less if you want it to look like a Brittany’s famous “far”. In a buttered pie-dish set the mixture, and then add the fruits. Finally baked in the oven around 180deg for 20 to 30min depending on the size (if no oven, you can bake in a greased pan under cover at low eat). You can add any type of fruit in that support heat: berries, cherries, plums, peaches, apricots… You can eat warm or cold.

Hotel life: my American favorites

When traveling it’s always hectic with food for me, I don’t like eating out 3 times a day. Most portions are way too big and I get quickly bored with the amount of mix tastes that surpasses my imagination.  As you may know now, I like simple delicious things. So when in the US I really enjoy organic groceries that can be found pretty easily in main cities and sometimes opened round the clock (even better for jetlag and busy working days). It seems particularly true in Boston. There, you can buy things I didn’t even imagine exist, almond milk yogurt with coconut taste, super delicious cereal bars, fresh cut fruits, natural cheese, teas (i usually pack on Chai), tons of different types of flours (well I’m not baking in my hotel room…) and my favorite drink, non organic though but from sustaible harvested ingredients: the Naked fruit smoothies, just perfect for middle-of-the-night-breakfast!

During this short stay in Boston I tried the new to me (haven’t been to the US for 2 years!) pineapple-mango-coconut water Naked, and just loved it, not as thick as the regular mango one! And I found super delicious bars from Earnest eats, my favorite is the almond trail mix. The taste of almond is really strong but it’s really good and just not too sweet. That and a bowl of fresh raspberries was my post-swimming breakfast.

Because, yes! I always pick hotels with a swimming pool. I love to swim early in the morning to recover from jetlag. Doing laps before starting a long business day, after a long trip is just making me feel really good. How do you do to keep a good balance when traveling?

Chocolate and walnuts breads

A great day starts with a great breakfast. For this morning I prepared chocolate and walnuts little breads, just out from the oven. And a fresh smoothie with pineapple, cantaloupe melon and strawberries. How about you? How do you start your day?

Breakfast with twisted orange bread, whole grain bread and smoothie

With Prunellia and Aurore visiting us I’m preparing a few samples of what we like to eat. The rice bowl with salad-acocado-tuna topping (see Prunellia’s post), nabe, cookies, smoothie, breads…

For breakfast I asked them to pick one bread they wanted to eat and they decided for a twisted orange bread. Excellent pick for breakfast!
This bread is a little sweet, with orange peels and orange blossom water. (250g of flour; 155g of water; 12g of dry sourdough; 2g of yeast; 20g of sugar; 5g of salt; 12g of butter; 12g of orange blossom water; 45g sugared orange peels. Mix everything together, until smooth, then prepare like regular bread, only in the end you twist the dough and bake in a buttered pan with a lid for 30min at 220deg.)

I also made a whole grain bread too (see previous post), and a green melon-pineapple-strawberry smoothie.

We ate the breads just out from the oven with homemade marmalade and butter. Deliciously warming on a rainy Sunday morning!
